Statement

My work considers the difference between truth and reality.  It involves the construction of, wooden sculptures with large surface areas on which I can paint.  I see the bare wood, as being truth or reality, whilst the painting on the wood may be considered as artificial.  A surface. Untrue.  A veneer which attempts to hide the truth of the wood.  I relate this to the person who tries to hide his identity by the means of decoration (make up) falsity and clothing.  Changing the persona by the means of changing the attire.  By this means a person can appear different each time that he changes clothes.  The painting on the surface is therefore an illusion covering the reality, but it is also a different version of the truth.  In many ways the surface reality is as true as that which underlies it.  Thus decoration becomes reality.  Some of my works attempt to deceive the eye, for example “making out without,“  where the eye is drawn into the work by the means of subterfuge.  The surface painting has no depth but the eye is deceived into thinking that the shapes move into and out of the work in three dimensions, although the painting is in two.  The work challenges the perception of reality.
